At this time of the year there are many carnival-like folk festivals throughout Bulgaria. Here’s a rather frightening costume they use in Shiroka Laka, a picturesque village in the Rhodopes mountains.

Bulgaria: Beyond the crowd is a photodocumentary showcasing many of the less visited places in Bulgaria. This documentary includes pictures of Veliko Turnovo, Rila, Bachkovo, some lesser-known Black Sea resorts like Ahtopol and Sinemorets, and of course the Rhodopes and Pirin mountains.

I am currently developing the historical journey and guide sections of Blue Bulgaria, which will cover many of these places. In the meantime, enjoy the show!
